El Dorado National Forest offers numbers campsite facilities that allow for horse trailers and stock. There are hundreds of miles of trails near the campsites that allow for equestrian use. Pacific Crest National Scenic Trail is the perfect spot for horseback riding within the El Dorado National Forest and can be reached in Desolation Wilderness for campers.
DRU BARNER PARK (Georgetown Ranger District)
This campsite is at an elevation of 3,000 feet. There are 16 sites for equestrian and/or single family use. There is no fee, water, or toilets in this park. No motorcycles are allowed at Dru Barner Park. To reach the site, take Wentworth Springs Road, which is 5 miles east of Georgetown. Turn left on Bypass Road. Continue 1.5 miles on the gravel road to the park. The Equestrian Trail is nearby. There are no reservations required.
LOON LAKE EQUESTRIAN GROUP (Pacific Ranger District)
This campsite is at an elevation of 6,500 feet. There are 5 sites for equestrian and/or single family use. There is a $35 fee with a maximum of 25 people allowed. This site features piped water, vault toilets, and picnic tables. It is located on Loon Lake in the Crystal Basin. Loon Lake is approximately 29 miles north of Highway 50 via the Ice House and Loon Lake Roads. Reservations are required through the National Forest Reservation Company from 05/24 through 09/10.
TELL CREEK HORSE CAMP (Pacific Ranger District)
This campsite is at an elevation of 6,300 feet. There is primitive equestrian camping available. There is a narrow paved road, no water, and no toilets in this park. There is stream water on site. Tell Creek Horse Camp is about about 20 miles east of Placerville via Highway 50. Turn on Ice House Road and travel north about 20 miles to Robbs Saddle. Turn east on Tells Creek Road (signed as Tells Creek Horse Camp/Desolation Wilderness Trail Head, Forest Road #13N22). Travel 6 miles to the parking area on the right. A corral is available just before reaching the parking area.
WRIGHTS LAKE (Pacific Ranger District)
This campsite is at an elevation of 7,000 feet. There is a campground, picnic units, and equestrian camping. No motor boats are allowed. There is a horse meadow, with no facilities or fees. There is stream water on site. Wrights Lake is located 34 miles east of Placerville and 8 miles north of Highway 50 on Wrights Lake Road in the Crystal Basin.There is access to Desolation Wilderness for the campground. Reservations are not required for equestrian camping. Reservations for the family campground will be required 07/12 to 09/02 and may be made through the National Forest Reservation Company. Weather permitting, the campground is available on a first come, first served basis before and after these dates.
Group equestrian camping is available at sites near the water. These sites have easy access to the beach. The Fleming Meadow Trail System is a great place for horseback riding with 9 miles of trails. Equestrian use is also permitted on most Eldorado National Forest Land, including trails into the Desolation Wilderness and Mokelumne Wilderness. Sly Park is located in Pollock Pines and can be reached via Highway 50 to Sly Park Road. From there turn left onto Lakewood Lane to the campsites. A two (2) night minimum reservation is required for weekends, 3 nights on Holiday weekends. Cancellations or date of arrival changes are allowed up to 4 days prior to arrival date for individual or family sites and 14 days for group sites. For individual or family sites the non-refundable reservation and change fees are $9 and cancellation fee is $15. Group Area non-refundable reservation and change fees are $20 and cancellation fee is $50. Reservations for individual campsites are accepted 14 months in advance.
